Proposed Millwright hiring hall change in August

Local 102 members, stay tuned!

Starting in August, it’s likely that out-of-work millwrights will have more choices when seeking work through the Local 102 hiring hall. The NCCRC Executive Committee is considering, and expected to approve the following changes to hiring hall practices.

For dispatch purposes, Northern California is divided into seven work zones. Currently, members of Local 102 are limited to two zones when they sign the out-of-work list. Local 102 wants to change that policy to be consistent with Carpenter Locals that have multiple areas.

Under the new policy, members will be able to select up to all seven zones when they sign the list. After signing, they will be able to remove a zone at roll call, with the change taking effect the following day without penalty. Adding a zone, however, requires re-signing at the bottom of the list.

During this transition, members who are currently on the list and were limited to two zones at signup, will be given one opportunity- during roll call on August 19- to add zones without penalty.

At the July meeting, the Council’s Executive Committee is expected to formally approve the proposed modification to Local 102’s hiring policy.

At the beginning of August, members of Local 102 should watch their mail for an official notice of the change. The notice will also be posted in the union hall, and all members on the Millwright out-of-work list will be notified of the pending change during roll call on August 5.

In addition, it is likely that roll call hours will be extended on August 19, to 7 am to 5 pm, (hours are typically 7 am to 12 pm) to allow time to explain the new rules to members as they sign up, and record changes to the out-of-work list.
