Get involved! Register and vote! Are you a voter? This year, California voters will be making a series of important decisions, including electing a new governor. Voters will get to choose between an experienced leader with a long record of support for Carpenters’ issues, or a corporate CEO who wants to eliminate the 8-hour day, while giving more tax breaks to her wealthy pals. Jobs, of course, are the most important thing in this struggling economy. Nearly every day, members of Carpenters In Action are attending public hearings or holding rallies outside public buildings where government officials are making key decisions about our jobs, our wages and our benefits. Those officials get there because voters put them in office, or allow them to remain. Are you a voter? The choices we make in November will have a real impact on our daily life. You can help make these decisions, but only if you are registered to vote. If you want to vote in November, you must be registered before October 18, 2010. It’s free, it’s easy, and it will take only a few minutes of your time. Included in the paper issue of The Northern California Carpenter is a Voter Registration Form. If you are not registered to vote, please take the time to fill out the form, and drop it in the mail. You don’t even need a stamp! If you have moved since the last time you voted, or if you have not voted in the last couple of elections, you may not be registered even if you think you are. If you are already registered to vote, and do not wish to change your address, party affiliation, or other registration information, disregard this form; you do not need to make any changes. If you do not need the form, please give it to someone else in your household, or a neighbor, or to a fellow construction worker. Register and vote, and help persuade your family, friends and fellow workers to do the same. If we all do our part, we can make this economy work for working people. You can also register to vote online:https://www.sos.ca.gov/nvrc/fedform/ Simply step through the screens, and fill in the information requested on the form. Then print it, sign it, and mail it directly to the county elections office address that is pre-printed on the form. Pick up a voter registration formYou can pick up a voter registration form at your Local Union. Forms are also available at your county elections office, library or U.S. post office. It is important that your voter registration form be filled out completely, and be postmarked or hand-delivered to your county elections office at least 15 days before the election. |
