Get involved! Register and vote!

Nearly every day, members of Carpenters in Action attend public hearings or rally outside public buildings where government officials are making key decisions about our jobs, our wages and our benefits. Those officials get there because voters put them in office, or allow them to remain.

This year, California voters will make a series of important decisions, including electing a new Governor. You can be part of the process, but only if you are registered to vote. To vote in June, you must be registered before May 24, 2010. It’s free, it’s easy, and it takes only a few minutes.

Registering to vote

You may register to vote in California if:

  • You are a United States citizen
  • You are a resident of California
  • You are at least 18 years of age (or will be by the date of the next election)
  • You are not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction
  • You have not been judged by a court to be mentally incompetent

You need to re-register to vote when:

  • You move to a new permanent residence
  • You change your name
  • You change your political party choice

You can register to vote online: www.sos.ca.gov/nvrc/fedform

Step through the screens and fill in the information requested. Then print it, sign it, and mail it directly to the county elections office address that is pre-printed on the form.

Pick up a voter registration form

You can pick up a voter registration form at your Local Union. Forms are also available at your county elections office, library and US post office. It is important that your voter registration form be filled out completely, and postmarked or hand-delivered to your county elections office at least 15 days before the election.
