75 winners chosen for $3,000 scholarshipCongratulations to the 75 recipients of this year’s Northern California Carpenters/Thomas A. Morton Memorial Scholarship Foundation scholarships! These sons and daughters of Carpenter members in the 46 Northern California Counties each receive $3,000 toward their college education, or other goals at accredited educational institutions. This is an increase of 15 scholarships over last year’s awards, and the amount of the award increased from $2,500 to $3,000. In a sign of the tough economic times, there were a record number of applications this year, with over 1,000 received by the deadline. On July 8, 2009, Millwrights Local 102 hosted the drawing to select the winners. The Regional Council Finance Committee (elected Financial Secretaries of their respective Locals) conducted the random drawing. “The need has never been greater, and we’re very pleased that we were able to increase both the number and the amount of these awards this year,” said Bill Feyling, Executive Director of the 46 Counties Conference Board, who serves as on the Board of the Scholarship Foundation. “With ongoing support from events like the golf tournaments, the clay shoot, and this year’s’ motorcycle run, we will continue to offer help and hope in tough times to the sons and daughters of our fellow carpenters as they strive to realize their dreams.” Note: For more information about the motorcycle run, please see announcement >
