Alvarado wins! August 1 was a great day for the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council. Close to 400 delegates, representing 29 Locals in Northern California, met in Martinez, and by a 3-to-1 margin voted to re-elect Bob Alvarado as Executive Officer.
This large margin in the face of a tough economy and high unemployment is a strong endorsement of Alvarado and his team, and his commitment to the members of the Carpenters Union. Alvarado was opposed by Eldon Clymer, the former President of Local 25, who also served as the Northern District Manager in the Casey Administration eight years ago. The campaign was spirited. Both candidates attended many local union meetings, distributed flyers at local and Regional Council meetings, and mailed letters to individual delegates. At the special Council meeting on August 1, the candidates each gave a two-minute speech, and then the vote was taken. Only delegates or alternates who were directly elected by the members of their Local were eligible to vote. Three-hundred-and-seventy delegates or alternates (voting in place of a delegate) cast a ballot, and Alvarado was re-elected by a margin of 272 to 95. There were also campaigns for the three Member-at-Large seats, which by tradition are reserved for rank-and-file members. For the Northern District, Manny Carrillo, Local 46, defeated incumbent Joel Vazquez, also of Local 46. In the Central District race, incumbent Jim Halloran, Local 22, defeated Leonard Ramos, Local 713. In the Southern District, Sister Laurie Martinez, Local 405, easily won re-election over Stephen Lund, also of Local 405. The only contested officer election was for Northern District Trustee, where incumbent Mike Krautheim, Local 35, held off a challenge from Eric Turguson, Local 751. All of the other officers were elected by a “white ballot,” that is, there were no opposing nominations. There was passionate support for candidates on all sides, but the election ran smoothly, and democracy is alive and well in Northern California. Congratulations to the all the newly elected members of the Executive Committee! ![]() Delegates look on as the Executive Committee takes the oath of office.
