Foundation expands college funding to Carpenters’ kids
en Espanol >
Could you use a funding boost for your child’s college tuition?
The Northern California Carpenters/Thomas A. Morton Memorial Scholarship Foundation can help, and even more than last year! This year the foundation will grant 75 scholarships of $3000 each (up from last year’s 60 scholarships at $2500) to the deserving-and lucky- sons and daughters of union members of the Local Unions in the 46 Northern California Counties. The selection process is by lottery, so grade point averages are not a factor.
Applications for this scholarship are available through your Local Union, and all applications must be returned to the Local, postmarked by June 30, 2009. If you need help with tuition, and you meet the requirements listed below, don’t delay! Contact your Local Union for an application.

Section 1.10. The term “Dependent” means:
Unmarried children, if they are:
- Natural or adopted children younger than 19 years of age; or
- Stepchildren or foster children younger than 19 years of age who live with the Active Employee and are solely dependent upon him/her for support; or
- At least 19 but less than 23 years of age, are full-time students at an accredited educational institution, and are solely dependent on the Active Employee for their support.
The Northern California Carpenters/Thomas A. Morton Memorial Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1991 by the Executive Officers of the Carpenters 46 Northern California Counties Conference Board, based on the belief that charity should begin at home and that the principal benefit of Union membership is not only to improve one’s own lot in life, but also that of our children. With that in mind, government approvals were secured and trust accounts were established. Contributions from golf tournaments and the like have been accruing, and this year we are able to give our awards to seventy-five (75) lucky applicants.
If your son or daughter is not one of the lucky recipients this year, be sure they apply next year if they are still in school. With good fortune and wise investments, the number of awards will continue to grow each year.
Remember, contact your Local Union for an application!
