Helping Habitat: Locals 9109 and 46 pitch in to drywall two homes![]() Above: Members from locals 9109 and 46 finished the drywall for two homes for Habitat for Humanity in record time on January 17. When 24 volunteers from Local 9109 and Local 46 pitched in to drywall two homes for Habitat for Humanity in January, they called it a day before lunch. With a 7 a.m. start, this hard-working, generous-spirited team finished all their work in the three-bedroom, two-bath houses before noon. Over the past nine years, members of Local 9109 have volunteered to drywall more than twenty new homes in Nevada and Sacramento counties through the Habitat for Humanity program, mainly with Habitat’s Construction Chairman Frank Sobrere. Local 9109 member Guillermo Hernandez, aka “Memo”, has played a central role in organizing these efforts for Habitat for Humanity. On January 17, the members went to Nevada City to help the proud new homeowners—a dad and mom and their three children, and also a mom and her four children. Hernandez and Brian Vlahos met 22 members from Local 9109 and Carpenters Local 46, and at 7 a.m. headed to the jobsite. By 11:30 a.m., they were finished. ![]() ![]() Members assisted in completing the two three-bedroom/two-bath homes with approximately 12,000 square feet of sheetrock in 3.5 hours—not bad considering about half the volunteers did not have much experience hanging drywall, although it’s clear they felt a powerful need to give to their communities. Drywall/Lather Local 9109 expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in helping Habitat families make their dreams come true. Members who helped include:
Jose Villagran, Maria Cervantes, Walter Molina, Mario Luna, Marcelo Martinez, Jorge Orozco, Felipe Loza, David Hernandez, Martin Rios, Daniel Cabrera, Josue Ramirez, Rodolfo Arias, Jose Arias, Donaciano Lopez, Francisco Valdez Sr., Jose Hernandez, Miguel Jimenez, Geno Madruga, Carlos Valdez, Memo Hernandez,
Brian Vlahos—and special thanks to 50-year member of Local 9109, Claude Conley.
