Almost 200 families of members on the out-of-work list at Hayward’s Local 713 have extra groceries this month thanks to a dedicated support team. The Local and its Carpenters in Action (CIA) members joined with the Oklahoma-based Feed the Children and Hope 4 the Heart, a Hayward nonprofit food bank, to distribute food packages designed to supplement a family of four for one week.

In October, members of Local 713 voted to sponsor a truckload of food from Feed the Children. Each tractor-trailer is loaded with 24 repacked pallets of non-perishables to supplement the groceries of 400 families of four for a week.

The Hope 4 the Heart food bank, which provides food to more than 12,000 Hayward-area families each month, generously donated its facilities for distribution. Hope 4 the Heart also gave each of the 194 Local 713 families who attended one whole chicken, a carton of eggs, a case of sports drink, lettuce, sauces, pastries and miscellaneous organic vegetables.

On December 17, Carpenters Local 713 will distribute the remaining 206 sets of food packages to its members on the out-of-work list.

Local 713 would like to thank all member volunteers, the Executive Board and staff who were instrumental in making this event a success.
